Imposter Syndrome in the Kingdom: “Who Am I, Lord?”
dennistheaffiliate0 Comments

When Calling Feels Bigger Than You

You prayed for opportunity.

Then it came, and suddenly you questioned yourself.

The promotion arrives.
The platform expands.
The responsibility increases.

And instead of confidence, a quiet thought surfaces:

“Do I really belong here?”

This is the tension many leaders never talk about. Externally, people see competence. Internally, you feel like you’re still catching up.

Modern psychology calls it imposter syndrome, the fear that you are not as capable as others believe.

But Scripture reveals something deeper.

Many of God’s greatest leaders wrestled with the same internal question.

Moses Asked the Same Question

When God called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt, Moses’ first response was not enthusiasm.

It was hesitation.

“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” — Exodus 3:11

Moses did not question God’s power.
He questioned his own adequacy.

He pointed to his limitations.
His past.
His lack of eloquence.

Yet God never responded by praising Moses’ qualifications.

Instead, God gave a simple answer:

“I will be with you.” — Exodus 3:12

God shifted the focus away from Moses’ ability and back to God’s presence.

This is the critical leadership lesson:
Calling is not built on self-confidence. It is built on God-confidence.

John Maxwell often teaches that leadership expands as leaders grow in capacity. But capacity does not come from waiting until you feel ready. It comes from saying yes while God develops you along the way.

The assignment grows you as you steward it.

A Short Story: The Reluctant Teacher

A woman once felt called to teach a small Bible study in her community. She loved Scripture, but the thought of leading others intimidated her.

“What if I can’t answer their questions?”
“What if someone knows more than I do?”
“What if I fail?”

For weeks, she delayed starting.

Finally, a mentor asked her one question:
“Are you trusting your ability, or God’s calling?”

That question shifted everything.

She began the study, not perfectly, but faithfully. Over time, the group grew. Conversations deepened. People found encouragement in God’s Word.

Years later, several of those same participants began leading studies of their own.

The ripple effect started with a reluctant yes.

Imposter syndrome almost silenced a calling that was meant to multiply.

The Leadership Lens: Growth Happens Inside the Assignment

Imposter syndrome thrives when leaders believe they must be fully prepared before stepping forward.

But in God’s Kingdom, preparation often happens during obedience.

David learned courage while tending sheep before facing Goliath.
Peter learned leadership after years of walking with Jesus.
Paul developed influence through seasons of refinement.

God rarely waits until you feel ready.

He invites you to grow while you move.

Confidence in the Kingdom does not come from perfection.
It comes from faithful stewardship.

The Affirmation: Aligning Your Identity With Your Calling

Your words must agree with God’s assignment over your life.

Speak this aloud:

“God has called me for this season, and His presence equips me. I grow in wisdom, courage, and leadership as I walk in obedience.”

The goal is not to eliminate humility.

The goal is to remove hesitation that contradicts God’s voice.

You are not stepping forward alone.

The Coaching Challenge

This week, reflect on the opportunity that currently feels bigger than you.

Ask yourself:

  1. Where am I doubting my calling?
  2. What fear is disguising itself as humility?
  3. What small step of obedience can I take today?

Then remember this truth:

You do not have to feel ready to be faithful.

Confidence grows through action.

When Comparison Steals Your Confidence
dennistheaffiliate0 Comments

The Trap of Looking Sideways

You were confident until you started scrolling.

You were focused until you saw what someone else was building.

You were content until you compared timelines.

Comparison is one of the fastest ways to drain a called leader’s confidence.

It whispers:

  • “They’re further ahead.”
  • “You should be doing more.”
  • “Why isn’t your growth happening like theirs?”

And slowly, what began as inspiration becomes insecurity.

Comparison doesn’t just distract you.
It distorts your assignment.

The Danger of Losing Focus

Scripture gives us a vivid picture in Matthew 14.

Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water, something no other disciple attempted. He was moving in bold obedience.

But the moment he shifted his focus from Jesus to the wind and waves, he began to sink (Matthew 14:29–30).

The storm didn’t change.
His focus did.

Comparison works the same way. When you fix your eyes on others instead of your calling, your confidence weakens.

Galatians 6:4–5 says:

“Each one should test their own actions… without comparing themselves to someone else.”

God measures stewardship, not speed.
He rewards faithfulness, not visibility.

From a leadership lens, influence expands when leaders stay in their lane with intentionality. John Maxwell often teaches that growth compounds over time. But comparison interrupts consistency.

You cannot build legacy while constantly benchmarking your obedience against someone else’s timeline.

A Short Story: The Runner Who Almost Quit

A young marathon runner trained for months for his first race. He started strong, disciplined, focused, steady.

Midway through the race, faster runners began passing him. Doubt crept in.

“Maybe I didn’t train enough.”
“Maybe I’m not built for this.”

His pace slowed, not because he was tired, but because he was discouraged.

A coach along the sidelines shouted, “Run your race!”

He refocused. He stopped watching who passed him and started watching his stride. He finished strong, not first, but faithful.

Years later, that discipline positioned him for greater endurance and stronger finishes.

Comparison nearly cost him completion.

Your race was never designed to mirror someone else’s.

The Leadership Lens: Confidence Comes From Clarity

Comparison clouds clarity.

Clarity comes from:

  • Knowing your assignment
  • Understanding your season
  • Trusting God’s timing
  • Measuring progress against obedience

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that there is a time for everything. Some are planting. Some are pruning. Some are harvesting.

If you compare planting to harvesting, you will feel behind.

But seasons are not signs of failure; they are signs of preparation.

Leaders who endure are leaders who stay aligned.

The Affirmation: Reclaiming Your Lane

The tongue must discipline the mind.

Speak this aloud:

“I run my race with grace. My assignment is not up for comparison. I am aligned with God’s timing and faithful in my season.”

Confidence returns when you stop competing and start stewarding.

You were not created to replicate someone else’s impact.
You were created to release your own.

The Coaching Challenge

This week:

  1. Identify one area where comparison has weakened your confidence.
  2. Fast from measuring your progress against others for seven days.
  3. Write down three pieces of evidence of growth in your own journey.

Then ask yourself:

If I fully trusted God’s timing, what pressure would I release today?

Comparison shrinks influence.
Alignment expands it.
